Halloween in Medicine Hat

Halloween is almost here, and Medicine Hat is getting ready for a night of costumes, candy, and little ghosts and goblins making their way around the neighbourhood.

Whether your family loves going door to door, prefers an indoor Halloween activity, or is looking for something fun to do before the big night, there are plenty of ways to celebrate. Here’s a quick guide to help you plan your Halloween in Medicine Hat.

Trick-or-Treating Spots

Your Own Neighbourhood

The classic choice! Walking around your own neighbourhood makes it easy to keep the evening familiar, close, visit friends, and head home when little legs get tired.

If you're taking the kids to another neighbourhood, make sure you remind them to stick together - especially if they’re old enough to go a few blocks on their own.

Short Walk Communities

Halloween can be a wonderful opportunity for kids to share their costumes and bring a little seasonal cheer to older citizens. They genuinely delight in seeing the children and their costumes! We have two great options in Medicine Hat for walking a 55+ community and going door to door.

Both spots located off Park Meadows Drive;

  • Park Meadows Adult Living (30-45 Minutes to walk the loop)

  • Sandstone Place Adult Living (20-25 Minutes to walk the loop)

Reminder: going a bit earlier is best for these locations, as some enjoy an earlier bedtime and quiet.

Outdoor Safety

Sadly, Halloween evening has the highest number of children on foot involved in motor vehicle collisions than any other day of the year. Safety is huge on halloween… here are some of the best ways to keep little goblins and ghouls safe:

  • Ensure kids carry flashlights, glow sticks, reflective strips, or another light up option. These are often an after thought - but they can be incorporated into costumes in a really fun and eye catching way. If your childs costume doesnt require lights and they need two hands for that pillow case consider taping reflective strips onto the bag theyre using for candy.

  • Stay in a group and plan the group ahead so kids know who they’re with and who to look out for.

  • Only open candy once at home and a parent has been able to assist in the unload and given it all a good look.

  • Only go to homes with lights on outside and preferably inside as well. One good thing about the shorter days is its easier to see when someone’s home has a light or lamp on, telling you they’re ready and home for trick or treaters.

  • Talk to your kids ahead of time - review road and crossing safety, talk about staying on sidewalks and not taking short cuts or alley ways, and reiterate what they should say or do if someone invites them into their home or offers them a ride.

  • If you’re sending your older kids out without an adult ensure they have a phone, walkie talkie, or apple watch/communication device that they can communicate with.

As adults - be aware. Kids WILL be out on Halloween Night, and they’re often with friends, distracted, and not watching when they should be.
