A Local's Guide To Summer In Medicine Hat

Summer hits fast in The Hat, and here's how a local actually spends it: the parks, the patios, the Stampede, and everything in between!

Start at the river

The South Saskatchewan River runs right through the middle of everything, and it's the backbone of summer here in a place with so much wonderful sun and heat. Police Point Park and Strathcona Park flank both sides of the River (North & South), tucked into the river valley with shaded trails that stay cool even when the rest of the city is hot. These parks provide easy walks, a great spots to bring the dog and the kids to explore, and quiet enough that it never feels crowded even on a long weekend, unless you’re hitting the splash pad at Strathcona on a hot day; that’s where you’l meet some families!

Kin Coulee Park is where a lot of families end up. If you've lived here a while, you already know it. It's big, well kept, and tucked into the coulee, with covered picnic shelters, good shade, a creek path, fire pits, and an underpass straight to the off leash dog park. Good for birthday parties and any group that wants room to spread out. Play Beach Volley Ball, hit some balls at the diamond, play at the playgrounds and the Skatepark is located at the mouth.

Cool off without leaving town

Medicine Hat summers can get properly hot, and not everyone wants to sit by a river all day. Medicine Hat is known for its outdoor swimming pools. Hill Pool & Strathcona Pool are both great places to spend a few hours or take a swimming lesson! Redcliff also offers a wonderful outdoor swimming pools, the offers aquasize and swimming lessons, something for the whole family!

Spray Parks and Splash Pads are a fun spot too cool off and have a picnic while you watch the kiddos. Starthcona, Rossglen, Saamis Heights and Central Park all offer shaded spots to sit while cooling off in the sun!

Eat something that isn't from your own kitchen

Nobody wants to be stuck inside cooking when it's this nice out. The Farmers Market is a solid Saturday morning habit, local produce, baked goods, the works, and it's a good excuse to run into half the neighbourhood while you're at it.

Downtown has patios worth sitting on too. Grab something cold, find a spot in the shade, and watch the city go by for a while.

Take in the history while the weather's good

Medicine Hat is a city full of character, and summer is the one of the best times to see it. The Saamis Tepee stands as one of the largest of its kind in the world and it's worth the stop, especially if you've got out-of-town guests who need convincing that The Hat is more than a highway exit. This photogenic structure was once at the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988.

Medalta in the historic Clay District is another great spot that will blow your mind! Wander through the old kilns and get a feel for the pottery industry that put this city on the map. This is a one of a kind industrial heritage site that is worth seeing. There is a gallery that often will be showcasing artists in residence that pass through its doors as well as a shop to purchase souvenirs and the museum is a must see. This is a unique space that also offers classes in pottery if that’s your interest or you can host events!

Don't skip the Stampede

If there's one week that sums up summer here, it's Stampede week. Rides, food trucks, rodeo events, all breed horse show and the kind of energy that only happens once a year. Whether you go every single night or just swing by for the fireworks, it's one of those things that makes living here feel a little more like home.

The 2026 Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede takes place from July 22–25, 2026. The multi-day event at the Stampede Grounds features rodeo events, the midway, agricultural displays, and the Summer Night Shows lineup.

Get outside the city too

Part of what makes summer here good is what's just outside city limits.

Redcliff and the surrounding coulees are close enough for an easy drive, the red shale paths are perfect for biking or taking a walk with unique views

Elkwater is located in the Cypress Hills Inter-provincial Park, a short 40 min drive. This small resort community is a great day trip or make it a camping trip and stay for awhile. There is a wonderful lake for boating, numerous hikes, camping, biking trails and even a little beach for the kiddos to goof around and swim.
