Medicine Hat’s Best Picnic Spots

Medicine Hat summers are short, hot, and kind of perfect for eating outside. Here's where to do just that.

Kin Coulee Park

If you've lived here for any amount of time, you already know Kin Coulee. It’s a loved community hub that’s big, well-maintained, and set in the coulee so it has that slight sense of being away from things even when you're basically in the middle of the city.

There are covered picnic shelters (reservable through the city for bigger events, good natural shade, and a creek surrounding by a walking path.

The playground equipment is excellent, the washrooms are maintained by the city, there is fire pits for the perfect weenie roast, ball diamonds, volleyball nets, and easy access through the underpass tunnel to the off leash dog park!

Good for: Families, birthday parties, big groups who want room to spread out.

Echo Dale Regional Park

Echo Dale is a perfect daytime getaway spot just outside the city. It sits just outside the Hat along the South Saskatchewan River.

There are picnic tables, fire pits, a fishing lake as well as a swim lake. On the swim lake side there is a man made sand beach and playground equipment, volley ball nets, and an indoor canteen. If you don’t want to bring a picnic you’ll be covered… and if you do, make sure you pop in and grab and ice cream cone!

Once you’re beached out make sure you head over to the other side of the park and check out Echo Dale farms to see and feed the animals!

Good for: Families who want more than a playground, anyone who wants fire pit access, a place to spend the entire day swimming and enjoying the farm!

Note - As we write this blog on June 26 2026 Echodale Park is closed until further notice. Our hearts are with the family, children, first responders and lifeguards on duty who were affected by the incident that occured last week. Please check the Medicine Hat Parks website to ensure it is open before visiting.

Police Point Park

This spot is well loved by locals! Many folks walk the trails of police point daily too. It sits along the South Saskatchewan River with mature trees, trails, and river views that feel more dramatic than you'd expect from a city park.

If your kids are into birds or wildlife, you’ll want to stop in the interpretive center! Along with their robust programs and changing themes, this spot is filled with wild life. White-tailed deer show up regularly, birds can be spotted through the year, porcupines, rattle snakes, and even a couple eagles if you’re lucky. The picnic tables scattered through the park include some with direct river views.

Police Point is for people who want the quieter, more natural version of an afternoon outside.

Good for: Nature walks combined with a picnic, dog owners (on-leash), couples, anyone who enjoys a longer walk and river views.

Local tip: There are some dirt paths along the river, but the entire loop trail through the park is paved! If a bike ride is what you’re after this is a great spot for it. Don’t forget a bell! (also great for pushing a stroller!)

Strathcona Island Park

The reason people love Strathcona is right there in the name: it's on an island. The road crosses onto the island, and even though you're still in the city, the whole place has a slightly tucked-away feel that's hard to replicate.

There are picnic areas, walking paths, and green space along the river. Popular with dog owners and cyclists. The paths connect to the broader trail network, so you can bike in and skip the parking situation entirely (which is worth considering on a busy weekend, because parking is limited).

The park has a more natural, less groomed feel than some of the others here. The grass isn't always perfectly manicured. The river views, on a calm day, are some of the best in Medicine Hat. It's a good trade.

Good for: Dog owners, cyclists, couples, anyone who wants a riverside picnic without a big crowd.

A few things worth knowing before you pack the cooler

Shade matters! Medicine Hat is the sunniest cities in Canada in the summer. Full sun from noon to 3 p.m. is no joke. Parks with covered shelters or mature tree cover are important! Don’t forget sunscreen.

Bring extra water! Water fountains aren't always easy to find, and you will underestimate the heat. Pack extra!

Dogs are welcome at most parks, but always check whether you're in an on-leash area before you let them run. Police Point and Strathcona Island are both popular with dog owners and both require on-leash in most sections.

When in doubt, find the river. A lot of what makes Medicine Hat parks good is how many of them are built around the South Saskatchewan.

There's a lot of outdoor life in this city that even longtime locals haven't fully explored. Each of these parks has its own character and the right one for your afternoon really does depend on what you're after.

If you're newer to the Hat and still figuring out which neighbourhoods feel like home, these parks are actually a great way to get a sense of a community before you commit. Spend an afternoon in a park and you'll learn a lot about the people who live nearby.
